Well, Olds Elementary is officially out for the summer! I think we had an amazing year of reading and research in the library. I hope everyone will continue to read amazing books and explore new topics (here's a fun topic: why do all the insects come out in the summer?). If you are reading a great book, share it with us in the comments! Have a fabulous summer, students, parents, and teachers!
Great news! From now until April 5 when you sign up for We Give Books and choose Olds Elementary as your school, you can earn free books for Olds Elementary!
For every book you read, we earn one book for our school! Read Across America day is this Friday, March 1, 2013. We are celebrating reading and all things Dr. Seuss!
To celebrate, we are participating in Accelerated Reader's Read the Most from Coast to Coast! We are all taking as many quizzes as we can to beat last year's record! Don't forget to read everyday! As Dr. Seuss wrote in his book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Sneetches and Other Stories because I remember reading it with my family when I was a child. What is your favorite? The American Library Association (ALA) has just announced their top book awards for 2013. Check them out here and at our library (where we will be adding them soon if we do not already have them.)
A few of the winners: Newbery: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate Caldecott: This is Not My Hat written and illustrated by Jon Klassen Coretta Scott King (Author): Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney Coretta Scott King (Illustrator): I, Too, Am America illustrated by Bryan Collier and written by Langston Hughes Be sure to check them out! If you've read one and want to share a review, make sure to leave a comment! Happy Holidays, students and families! I hope you have a fabulous break and that you come back on January 2 ready to learn. Don't forget to check out AR Home Connect over the break to see your AR quiz scores and virtual bookshelf!
We have a great new addition to our Accelerated Reader program at Olds! If you would like to see what books your student has been reading or check up on their quiz scores, check out AR Home Connect. Click here and have students log in with their AR login to see a virtual bookshelf of the books they've read, their quiz average, and other information.
Accelerated Reader is out of this world! This year, students at Fred Olds are going ARound the world and shooting for the stARs! This year, we are encouraging students to read more nonfiction. Also, students should also be taking vocabulary quizzes. Don't forget, the library is open from 8:00 to 8:30 in the morning for Accelerated Reader. Happy reading!
